i give up.

what a week. is it over yet?

:-T

i'm exhausted by everything. i've decided that maintaining any kind of relationships with other people is too much of a hassle, too much of a drain. i'm thinking it would be much better to crawl into a cave and wait for the end of the world to come than to keep up with other people's riff-raff.

first off, it's quite a blow to one's ego to realize just how much of a security blanket my job has become for me. it is a fairly easy, albeit fast-paced, job, and i excel at it. the accolades and props i get for doing this job is like an intoxicating drug. i can't get enough of it. it is much easier to let myself get swept up in being successful at mediocrity than to muster up the patience, energy, and courage to face my demons until i slay them once and for all.

i'm a coward. i know that.

and then i'm finding it to be way too much work to deal with other people -- dimples, nymph, and others. it's crazy and disheartening to discover that, despite how much time you've spent with such people and all the things you've shared with each other, they don't really know or appreciate you as much as you had originally thought. . . .

nymph has been getting on my nerves these past couple of weeks. she has a bit of a know-it-all attitude and likes to have the last word on things. i'd noticed this about her from the start, but it's only been recently that it's become really annoying. finally, it got to the point today where i started picking a fight with her. it wasn't very cool of me to do, but i just couldn't help it. something in me wanted to let loose on her and let her know that she wasn't superior to me at all -- that there was more to me than she knew about -- and that there was some props behind things i had to say, perhaps even more props than her.

she had been talking about a friend of hers, a girl who got her masters degree. but the friend, after completing the degree, stated that she had no intent to make any use of the degree in the particular field. nymph said that was a waste of her friend's life -- to give up a certain number of years in her life for an education that she was not going to use.

i took issue with that -- for obvious reasons. and i started picking a fight with her. nymph doesn't know i went to law school and have a j.d. but i wanted to instigate a fight with her so that i not only could finally tell her about it but also to exorcise my own demons. i wanted an excuse to verbally ream her.

nymph didn't rise to the bait at all, though, and i suppose i have to give her credit for that. but things are rather tense between us now. she's mad at me. and i know that this is the last straw for her; my behavior towards her has been deteriorating these past couple of weeks, and i hit the point of no return.

i deserve it, i know. but at the same time, i do wish she'd own up to her own annoying propensities as much as me. like, i'm a pretty emotional person, but i tend to keep those emotions inward. when it comes to interacting with others, though, i have never, ever lost my self-control to the point where i don't know what i'm doing or saying. everything with me is pretty calculated; i always know what i'm doing or saying. the hard part for me, then, when i get to a certain point emotionally, is just in getting myself to obey the inner voice when it tells me i shouldn't say or do something.

but trying to pick fights, like i did with nymph today, is just totally rare.

and dimples.

i thought she knew me pretty well. but today, i discovered how little she really does. it just makes me think twice; like, after all this time we've spent together and the things we've shared with each other, i would just expect her to have a better sense of who i was. i feel like i know her pretty well and can read her mood and state of mind at any given time. i thought she knew me in a similar way, but . . .

guess not.

:-T

it just makes me reassess things. it makes me reassess the things i take for granted, such as the belief that i am able to clearly convey everything i think and feel so that there is no ambiguity, no question of where i stand and who i am. it makes me reassess the level of trust i can place in others to be able to read me and my words and actions clearly.

so no, i don't blame dimples for not understanding me as much as i'd thought she did, after all this time.

but at the same time, i don't want to expend any effort to rectify the matter. my relationship with her, just like my relationships with other people, require too much work. too much conscientiousness. too much tip-toeing.

i give up.

Wow, this is exciting. It's time for some totally uninvited and unsolicited (that's the same thing, huh?) advice.

Ok, from the start, I really don't think that dimples is the right person for you right now. Yes true, I have NO CLUE who you are. However, I DO know that you are looking for a serious relationship on some level. Like all of us, you seek to love and be loved. Dimples just does not seem like one who means what she says and says what she means. If she isn't 100% sure that she can be committed to you right now, she should not be tempting you with that kind of crap on the day before Thanksgiving. Are there so longer any women left with any sense of duty and responsibility in their actions and words? It sucks that she tells you she cannot commit and can only be there when it is convenient for her and then turns right around and just fools around with you.

I think that while there is absolutely nothing wrong with Dimples and you enjoying each other's company, what is crappy is that all of the energy and focus you spend on dimples will blind you when the right girl for you does come along. Missed opportunities...that's what sucks about it all in the end.

Also, I wanted to say just how brave it is for you to realize that your addiction to mediocrity is a mere crutch. While it may take a while for you to wean yourself off from this level of complacency, I can hear that you are a girl with fire. And when the time comes, you are going to be bored and you are going to conquer whatever lies ahead. Use the rest of this year to just finish your battles with dimples and nymph and when 2009 rolls around, be renewed, focused, and sharp...but most of all, be happy.

P.S. There is no such thing as being able to read anyone's mind all of the time. All we ever do is just take our best educated guess and some of us are better at reading between the lines than others.

P.S.S. It's too bad I don't know you in real life because we seem to have much in common. All the way down to cunnilingus philosophies and to the way we play slot machines.

OK, now that I am done with giving unsolicited advice, you can hate me now.

hi, cw. thanks for the comments and the advice. and no, i don't hate you. on the contrary. :)

i am in need of perspective/advice. serious need. so your words are much appreciated, especially the words of encouragement. i definitely am in need of hope at this point . . . . i've been super stressed and down this week. :-T

as for what you say about dimples . . . . i sort of believe you are right. and yet i also think she is great as a friend. in fact, right now, i feel like she is my only real friend; she knows all my secrets and has my best interests at heart. so . . . i'm up in the air as to whether i believe you're totally right . . . .

either that, or i am just making excuses for her. :-T

i do wish i knew you in person, too -- so that you could meet dimples in person, too, and let me know if you still think she's bad news! :)

Hi, abbagirl! Whew...I am pleased to hear that I am not blacklisted from your journal.

Being stressed is tough on sanity. I feel that way a lot now too because the pressure of work + the bar exam gets to me easily sometimes. Hang in there, abbagirl and just hold on to the fact that everything will ALWAYS work itself out in the end. You just have to be courageous and strong enough to ride it through.

I can sense that you are not ready to let go of dimples just yet. And that's okay too. I don't doubt for a second that she is a great friend but the truth is that you are in love with her. And regardless of how stoic you believe you can be, you probably have no willpower to be just pals with dimples. And truth be told, she probably does not have that willpower either with you. The bottom line is that you want one thing and she wants another. The more entangled you get with her, the harder it will be to separate when it is not by choice but by force.

It's true that there is no pressing and immediate need to end your intimate relationship with her. But, if that is your choice, then you have to live with its full consequences. Isn't it much better to be in control of one's destiny than to be vacillating to the wind's whim? One of my favorite quotes is by Camus: "Life is a sum of all your choices." That is really all there is to it. One can only hope that we all choose wisely when the time comes.

You TOTALLY don't have to believe my instincts on dimples because you know better than I do. I really think that most of the times, we are equipped with all of the knowledge we need when we are seeking the truth of something...what we REALLY need is the wherewithal to accept the truth. I am sure that all you need is a little more time and either your heart will catch up with your head (or your head will catch up with your heart). :)

I know it seems like she is your only real friend but that is only because you have let her close to your heart. You will feel the same way again with others when YOU allow it to happen again. The world is full of lonely people trying to reach out and connect in different ways. I promise you, it will happen again and when you find that the next person wants what you want too in a relationship - bingo! L<3VE. (I can't believe I just typed something so godforsakingly corny).

Cheer up, abbagirl. Good things are comin' your way.
